Are there Jellyfish in Oahu Hawaii during these times?
PugPants asked:
I was told that jellyfish are numerous about 7-10 days after the full moon. The next full moon will be on July 7th. My family and I are going to Oahu Hawaii on the 19th and staying for about a week. Should we take extra precautions?

NOTE: We will be going to Hanauma Bay and Waikiki beach for sure…
Does anyone have any information about the jellyfish in Hawaii? Does anyone know in what areas they might be most numerous? My family lived in Hawaii for three years and didn’t have much trouble with hte jellyfish.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!

Yup, those jellyfish come in like clock work 7 to 10 days after the full moon. But they don’t stay around for more than 4 days or so. So I think you should be in pretty good shape on the 19th.

Yes, there are usually jellyfish around 10 days after a full moon. And yes, they usually invade Waikiki Beach and Hanauma Bay. Warning signs are usually posted when they come, so just watch out for the signs. The only precaution I can think of is to not go in the water there during this time. As an alternative, you may try the west coast of the island instead. There’s a bus that goes all the way to Makaha Beach, which is also a nice beach to swim and picnic. Take bus number C from Ala Moana Center to reach it.

They are called box jellyfish. When I was young there were almost NEVER any jellyfish! The current theory is that the jellyfish population explosion around the world is an early warning signal of a disrupted environment out of balance, so sad…
The “8-12 days after a full moon” is the most common cycle because they come near shore to spawn, but this is a “rule of thumb”…you may have jellyfish at any time. But just watch for the posted signs, and listen to the news on tv!
These jellyfish are most numerous where the water is fairly still and warm, and also more common on the western and southern sides of the island. Kailua Beach is especially bad, but they can be in Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches as well.
There will be signs posted on the beach warning visitors, but you will see them washed up on the beach if they are close to shore anyway. Make sure not to touch them, the stinging cells are still active even washed up on the beach!
Don’t confuse the Hawaiian box jellyfish with the Australian box jellyfish. Although they are related, the one in Hawaii only has an awful and painful sting, but the sting of the species in Australia (also called the “sea wasp”) can be fatal, one of the most venomous animals known to man.
