Hawaii (Oahu) apartment thats not scary?
babyta0 asked:
I have visited oahu before and loved it, however i always stayed near the beach in waikiki or honolulu. Now my husband and i have been stationed in oahu by the army. He wants to live off of the military post and i need to find an apartment. But everything i find has horrible reviews and say that the crime and bugs are terrible. Both my husband and i are white and in a lot of the areas people are saying there are a lot of race issues, which is understandable. So does anyone LIVE or have lived there and know of an apartment complex or neighborhood that isn’t so bad? At this point i’m a little scared.

well as you know, there are good and bad places everywhere. I live in Hawaii Kai and couldnt be happier. Every one here is really nice. As far as bugs are concerned, the mosquitos and flies are really bad during the summer. Just use a black light on your lanai at night and keep the windows and screens closed.

Create a video blog…instantly.
Send me an email and I will send you a list. I don’t get any commission from rentals, you will need to contact the owners directly. You will need to tell me BAH amount, # of BRs, # of baths, if you need a yard, pets, parking, and whether you prefer a condo or townhouse. Or send an email and I will send you my phone number (It’s on my website).
You also want to have an application already filled out, so that when you find the right one, you can try to hold it. The really nice places get reserved the same day.
Don’t be afraid, I have lived off-based for over 10 years, not to worry.
Welcome to Hawaii.

Hello, the poster above me will be more help to you about location than I can ever be, so I will leave that part to him. But I would just like to give my opinion (for whatever it may or may not be worth!) about the race issues. It would be naive to say there are not any problems, but I don’t think they are as bad as many people say. I have worked with many military wives over the years & some really love it here & others can’t wait for the day they go back to the mainland. I think it depends on a whole lot of things, like how much a person needs to be close to home & family. If you are a little adventuresome (willing to try new ethnic foods, for example), are friendly, open, & treat everyone with respect, you should do just fine. Of course, there will always be a few folks with a chip on their shoulder, but that should be the exception.
I hope you have a good experience here.
