Is pearl harbor worth visiting? How bout the dole plantation? Are the beaches free?
Dark Knight asked:
I heard that Pearl Harbor is about a two hour wait to get into, I’m thinking about taking that off my itinerary. Also, if I make a stop at the Dole Plantation, what could I expect, and how long will I be there approximately? Are all the beaches and parks free in Oahu?

If you get to the Memorial early in the morning, the wait isn’t so bad. When we were there, it was about a 40 minute wait…and worth every moment! There is nothing more profound than standing over a sunken ship; even with hundreds of other people on the memorial site with you, it’s as quiet as a tomb…VERY humbling experience in my opinon!
The Dole plantation was….eh. They charge you for EVERYTHING…the maze, the train ride, the tours….all of it. We spent about an hour walking around the “free” garden, had a pineapple smoothie and beat feet out of that place. It was crazy expensive and really not worth the drive in my opinion.
All the beaches we went to were free with the exception of Hanauma Bay, but that was really affordable too ($6 each) for all the snorkeling we could stand. I DO recommend doing that…but again, get there as early as you possibly can, otherwise it gets crazy crowded.
So to summerize: Yes, do see Pearl Harbor, do see a few beaches, don’t bother with the Dole plantation. And in my humble opinion, DO see the Polynesian Cultural Center (and get the guided tour). That is also something that was worth every penny in my opinion.

Pearl Harbor is open at 0730, its free, its historic. You should make that a Priority if you are a true American. you can see what thrust this great country into WWII. Dole Plantation is in Wahiawa, get the pineapple ice cream. Beaches on Oahu free, the SeaLife park you have to pay.

Go to Pearl Harbor. It is a very humbling experience. Ditch the Dole plantation and go to the Byodo-in temple it is incredibly beautiful. All the beaches are free with the exception of hunahma bay (sp) but well worth the minimal cost. A must see for snorkeling. Also go to the botanical gardens. Don’t just go there to sit in the sun. Find out something about the culture it is very interesting and you will enjoy your visit much more.
